He was killed shortly after this photograph was taken, while driving to his brigade’s position. It is thought that the jeep carrying Lt. Col Duncan hit a mine. Other witness accounts suggest an artillery round fired from a German 88 mm anti-aircraft and anti-tank artillery gun across the valley hit the vehicle.
